My books are spread out between three different spots in my apartment, and on a proper bookshelf in my bedroom in Vermont. I’ve read the books pictured here, except the physics books on the bottom left that I only ever partly read on planes because they have an odd calming effect on me.  I also haven’t finished Flaubert’s Sentimental Education, which in the movie Manhattan is named a reason life is worth living by Woody Allen’s character. I would argue The Bell Jar is the same.

So, that’s all to say that these are the kind of books I like. And now I need book recommendations…

I am trying to distract myself with books, because Lost is currently on the television, and I can’t watch this week or last week’s episode until my Lost-watching partner in crime returns to New York. Anyway, I was flipping through some of my favorite books that I haven’t read in a long time, and forgot that I used to constantly mark up the pages with notes and stars and underlines. I miss doing that, I have to read more. Can you guess which books these are? I’ll put the answers after each photo.

Selected Essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson (this one is titled Over-Soul, this is the most marked up book I own)

The Fountainhead (did you know Ayn Rand leaked the meaning of life into this novel?)

Notes from the Underground, Fyodor Dostoyevsky (this is one of my favorite quotes)

Okay, this one isn’t marked up, but do you know what novel this first page is from?
